, according to the u.s. coast guard they're probably less than 50 miles away from mobile right now. that might sound pretty close, but it's probably going to feel like an eternity before they get here. there was a flurry of activity last night with helicopters delivering new supplies to the ship and some new generators, so that sort of implies that they might have some means to have more electricity on board and everyone to have perhaps more food and more water before they get here. but once they do arrive here, that's when things are going to start moving relatively quickly for the 3100 passengers on board. here the plans have already been made to have buses waiting for them to take them back to their cars in galveston, texas, so they can drive right home tonight if they want to or they can take them to a hotel where you can bet there will be plenty of people anxious to get to that first hot shower they have had in quite some time. you think about this, soledad, this ship was supposed to arrive in galveston, texas, on sunday. they're now 500 miles off course and five days overdue. >> or they

in the u.s. navy reserve, is a trained sniper. it's what makes this manhunt both urgent and particularly dangerous. chris lawrence joins me now. in this manifesto he says he's always been the top shot, as i just read. do his military records back that up? >> militarywise, he's good, but he's exaggerating a little bit. the u.s. navy has three levels of proficiency above the base line. marksman, sharpshooter and then expert at the highest level. he qualified as a marksman with the rifle, but he did qualify as an expert, though highest level with the 9 millimeter pistol. he also received some training on weak side shooting. even some very good shooters have a hard time going from the right thoohand to the left hand. he would have been trained in shooting from his weak side. if you are shooting from a concealed position, if you can shoot from your weak side, you might not have to expose as much of your body. you'd be a smaller target and still be able to return fire. >> dorner -- this guy also promises to use specific warfare tactics and survival training. he was never in special ops which w

: bahamian maritime officials are the lead investigators since the ship is registered in nassau. u.s. coast guard and ntsb officials are also working to figure out what went wrong. specifically, investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. crew response, engine maintenance, and safety procedures on board the ship. we spoke to a maritime expert who has participated in these types of investigations which could result in minor safety changes to more drastic measures. >> there could be sanctions against members of the crew and against the officers. and in the most extreme case, there could be sanctions against the owners of the ship. >> reporter: an engine fire on carnival "splendour" in 2010 also left thousands of passengers adrift for days in the pacific with no power and limited food. the coast guard and the ntsb have not yet released its findings of that incident. >> i know the coast guard and national transportation safety board at you report are involved in this. how long do you think this is going to take? there are a lot of different parties involved. >> reporter: absolutely. a
